Moments in Time

During the summer of 2020, we worked to interview more than 30 past and present TCSAR volunteers, whose service to the community is invaluable. Below is a window into what they experienced. If you are a past Search & Rescue volunteer who would like to complete the survey, please click here.

Perhaps not a good one but the day our contract helicopter crashed and one of our teammates died.

Do you have a memorable interaction with a patient or patient's family member that you are willing to share?

Nothing comes to mind. After 16+ years, I do my best to “leave it in the field!”

Is there any special object you never went to a rescue without?

My brain.

Lastly, what is one object you never leave the house without today?

Still my brain.

Dina Mishev, Retired, SR44

What is your most memorable moment or rescue from your time as a SAR volunteer for Teton County?

A plane crash on Pyramid Peak in the Gros Ventre Mountains

Arlo Neiderer, Retired, SR45

What is your most memorable moment or rescue from your time as a SAR volunteer for Teton County?

Helping Sublette and Fremont County SARs find a missing person in the Wind River Range that they had looked for for over a week. We were called in to help out. Since I was skilled at planning searches, I was asked to look at what had already been done and re-evaluate. I re-tasked the search and the missing person was found the first morning of the re-tasked search.

Is there any special object you never went to a rescue without?

Leatherman Juice multitool.

Lastly, what is one object you never leave the house without today?

Cell phone.

Just being thanked around town by individuals who recognize me from a SAR call and the personal thanks for what the team does 24/7/365.

Is there any special object you never went to a rescue without?

St. Bernard patron saint medal.

Lastly, what is one object you never leave the house without today?

A kiss goodbye and a cup of coffee!

JC Whitefield, Retired, SR17

What is your most memorable moment or rescue from your time as a SAR volunteer for Teton County?

When a young man was discovered in a log jam and I was above the jam with his entire family to see his body and bent-over kayak come out. His body was never recovered afterwards.

Do you have a memorable interaction with a patient or patient's family member that you are willing to share?

Our team was carrying a deceased man off the top of a mountain and I brought in an extra horse to carry his wife down. On the way down, I stopped several times to pick some wildflowers for her memory. She requested that a pick out a photograph of that area and I did but added the dried wildflowers below the photo.

Is there any special object you never went to a rescue without?

My rescue pack.

Lastly, what is one object you never leave the house without today?

Water and cell phone.

Any final thoughts?

Search and Rescue work is the most memorable and rewarding work I have ever done.
